One of the most common questions you will hear when pregnant is, “how are you feeling?” That’s because for many women, pregnancy is accompanied by a range of uncomfortable symptoms such as sickness, fatigue, and mood swings. However, a pregnancy without symptoms is possible!
Whilst uncommon, there are cases where a person will experience a pregnancy without symptoms during any trimester. This phenomenon, known as asymptomatic pregnancy, is more common than you think. Research suggests that up to 20% of pregnant people will experience a pregnancy without symptoms, even during the first trimester where symptoms are most common.
So why do some people breeze through pregnancy without symptoms, while others struggle with difficult side effects? Science suggests that it comes down to individual differences in hormone levels and genetics. Some people are simply more genetically predisposed to experiencing more challenging symptoms during pregnancy, while others may have a higher tolerance for hormonal changes, so can experience pregnancy without symptoms.
As well as our body’s natural chemistry, studies have shown that stress and anxiety can exacerbate certain symptoms such as low mood and fatigue. By learning how to relax and manage stress effectively, you may be able to reduce these symptoms somewhat.
If you are currently experiencing a smooth pregnancy without symptoms, try not to worry.
Being pregnant without symptoms can sometimes feel stressful, as it’s easy to take symptoms as reassurance that your pregnancy is progressing, especially early on before you feel your baby moving. However, symptoms aren’t a true or accurate representation of your pregnancy, so always seek medical support. Conversely, if you are struggling with pregnancy symptoms, remember you are not alone. Seek resources such as social media accounts for support.
Evidence also shows that hypnobirthing techniques such as deep relaxation, and self-hypnosis helps reduce stress and anxiety, which can have a big impact on your physical and emotional well-being during pregnancy. In a study published in the Journal of Obstetric, Gynecologic, and Neonatal Nursing, researchers found that pregnant people who participated in hypnobirthing classes reported lower levels of stress and anxiety compared to those who didn’t.

However, it’s important to note that every pregnancy is unique, and what works for one person may not work for another. While some may be lucky enough to sail through pregnancy without symptoms, others may find themselves grappling with difficult side effects throughout. Unfortunately there is no way to predict what symptoms you will experience, when you will experience them, or for how long. The best thing to do if you are struggling, is to seek medical help, learn to use your mind, and focus on the positives, no matter how small they may feel. A pregnancy without symptoms brings no guarantee that subsequent pregnancies will follow suit, as each time is different. It’s simply luck of the draw! While it is possible to have a pregnancy without symptoms, it is not something we can control or predict, it’s just luck!
